Results of our parent surveys

Survey opened 12/7/21  Closed 20/09/21 

The link was publicised: in letter that went out with each child’s report,  Newsletter 16/07 and 23/07 and via text.

The results of our parents’ survey are below:

  •  93% of respondents agreed their child was happy at our school. 64% of respondents strongly agreed.
  •  Only one respondent disagreed with the statement “The teaching is good at Sir Francis Drake”.
  •  82% of respondents felt that the school curriculum engages their child
  •  82% of respondents felt that their child was making good progress in school
  •  60% of respondents felt that the homework set was appropriate for their child
  •  57% of respondents felt the school dealt appropriately with bullying, however only 7% disagreed with the statement. Some respondents did not know or had no experience to draw on.
  • 82% of respondents felt that their child knew who to talk to if there was a problem
  • 89% of respondents felt it was easy to approach the school with concerns or questions
  • 71% of respondents felt the school was led and managed well.  11% of respondents did not know.
  • 89% of respondents would recommend Sir Francis Drake school to a friend.

It was really nice to receive some positive feedback about the things the school is doing well

 Some of the other comments and queries we received:

Have a higher prevalence of diversity at a senior level in the school that reflects the cultural diversity of the pupils.

Our senior team consists of the Head, Deputy, Sendco, School Business Manager and Chair of Governors.  In this group there are 4 females and one male, three people of white origin and 2 people who are not.

As covid restrictions ease we are hoping that our chair of governors can be in and around school more, meeting parents and seeing the children.  He did visit in July and met a number of parents on the gate.  Details of his visit are on the website here and we will continue to update this page with more governor visits as they happen. 

Fully engage parents in supportive partnerships

As Covid restrictions lessen we will aim to have more partnerships with parents.  We are already running phonics workshops and asked parents to help us with our Black History Month curriculum this half term.  This term we took the decision to offer a range of different approaches to parents’ evening so that parents would find it easier to attend.  We are also planning a series of maths workshops in the coming months as well.

Make every child matter in every lesson.

We are constantly looking to improve the teaching and learning in school and are always working on ways to ensure children are involved in their learning in each lesson.  The school council have been reinstated this year as restrictions have eased and we will use this as a forum for pupil voice.

My suggestion is for the school to encourage students to do well in their studies and give descriptive praise cards (not just stickers) where students excel in their studies.

This term we have again reviewed our behavior policy.   We are working with the school council on ways we can reward children for excellent work.  We will put this suggestion to them. We are continuing with our weekly shout outs for children where teachers can recognise good work or behaviours. 

Help children who arrive in school and do not speak the language

Children who arrive in our school with limited English are supported first with spoken language so that they can communicate with their peers and teachers.  We have used ipads to support children to translate parts of the lesson including technical language.  We have also used them to translate maths questions to ensure we can accurately assess a child’s mathematical ability. Children read regularly with adults and are supported in the specifics of English grammar and sentence construction at an age appropriate level.   We will continue to look at ways we can support our learners who arrive in school with little or no English, taking advice from other local schools.   

Add a sports session after school

After school clubs started on 27th September and include 2 after school sports sessions.  We have arranged a number of after school friendly football competitions and the school are also taking part in a local schools football competition in December based at Millwall’s ground.

 

We also sent out a survey on 22nd September to ask parents to help us with our curriculum development.  This link was sent out in a letter, by text on 23rd September and was included in the newsletter on 24th September.   This led to a 'top 9 inspirational non white Londoners; that each class picked from to study during Black History month.  We received a number of comments about how we could continue to enhance our curriculum offer too.  

You should study Sir Francis Drake and the fact he was a slave trader

Absolutely. The history of the person our school is currently named after is important.  Following our Black History Month work we will be looking at this topic and ensuring that the children know the full history of Sir Francis Drake, including his links to the slave trade.  

I think that non-white history should feature throughout the curriculum ie the Benin Empire, the Mayans, the Chinese Dynasties. I also think though, we teach too much about black American history and not enough about non-white Britons.

This year we have developed our curriculum to ensure that key parts of history are taught across the school.

In Year 2 the children specifically study Neighbourhood Explorers which are historical events and people in the local community.

In Year 3 the children study the Shang Dynasty in China

In Year 5 the children study the Benine Emire

In Year 6 the children study the Mayan civilization.

 

 

We will continue to develop our provision and specifically focused on non white Londoners for Black History month as we also recognize the need to learn more about this aspect of British history.

Thank you to everyone who suggested people and curriculum areas they feel should be part of our curriculum.  We asked all of the children in KS2 for their views as well.  These ideas are being looked at by Miss Darbourne who leads our Humanities curriculum and we will do our best to incorporate a more diverse range of historical and current figures in our curriculum.
