Reading

Inferring

Inferring is when we use clues from the text to give us information about what is happening in the story or know what is going to happen. We can infer things like: how characters are feeling, when and where the story is set, what will come next in the story, what time of the year and time of the day it is and the type of personality each character has. We can make inferences when the author uses 'show not tell'.

Task: Answer each of these questions using full sentences.

Make sure you begin with "I can infer that..." and then justify (explain) your answer by using the word "because".

Eg. Are the teachers at the boarding school strict? How do you know?

I can infer that the teachers at the boarding school are quite strict because they value good manners and are very quick to punish students for minor incidents such as chewing their hair.

 

1. How are Maia's school friends feeling about her moving to the Amazon in this part of the story? How do you know?

2. Was Maia feeling confident about sharing her homework with the class? How do you know?

3. Is Miss Minton a nice lady? How do you know? (Note: Miss Minton is the governess looking after Maia on her journey) 

4. Why was Miss Minton fired from her previous job ? How do you know?

5. Why did Miss Minton wave her umbrella at the porter?

  • write your answers in pen/pencil and send me a photo of your work or

Maths

From this we forward, we are going to start to revise all of the maths we have learnt this year.

Do you remember how to use column addition to add 4 digit numbers together? Watch the video below to refresh your memory and then complete the exercises.

In this video, the teacher uses some different words to the words we use in class. Instead of using our word 'exchange', he calls it 'regrouping'. So just remember that regroup means the same as EXCHANGE

This teacher also does something a little bit differently when he makes an exchange. He puts the 1 above the digits and we know that we always exchange our 1 below the answer line. I don't mind which way you do it in your answers today and I will mark both ways correctly.

Task: Try answering as many of these questions as you can.

You may either:

- Print the questions and write on the page and then email me a photo of the work

- Write each question number down on a piece of paper with the answer next to it and then email me a photo of the work or 

- Write an email with the answers to each question in the email.

d. Ben scored 2534 sword points on Roblox. Mara was also playing Roblox and scored 3857 points. How many points to Ben and Mara have altogether?

 

Pink Work (Level 2)

 a. 785.7 + 394  (remember to keep all place value columns in line, including decimals)

 

b. 3856 + 984 + 375

 

c. Explain the mistakes I have made here:

 

 

d. Rachel was baking a cake and weighing her ingredients. She needed 1kg of flour in total but she had two bags of flour in her cupboard. One of her bags of flour weighed 452.8g and the other bag of flour weighed  549.6g. Does Rachel have enough flour for her recipe? Use column addition to solve the problem.

Task: Can you write a secret message in DIY invisible ink for you parents, siblings or anyone else living at your house?

Tip: If you do not have blueberries at home, you can use any other acidic fruit juice like raspberries, strawberries, oranges, apples and lemons.

Remember to protect your furniture with plenty of newspaper like when we do art and science experiments in the classroom!
