Questions to think about while reading:

Have you learned anything to add to your KWL chart? Is there anything you wonder or have learned?(ex. Gambia has tamarind trees- can you research what kind of tree this is? What type of food did grandmother serve Isatou?)

What solution does Isatou find for the broken basket?

Why grandmother might be frowning when she sees the plastic bag?

Why does the author use the line: "rainbows of plastic" to describe what Isatou sees? What idea does this give the reader? (Remember: word choice can often set the tone when reading a text- think about how rainbows look in the sky).

TONE Definition: A writer's attitude toward subject, audience, and ...

Written response:

What other items are made out of plastic? Although convenient at the time, the plastic bag Isatou picks up is not as sturdy and long lasting as her grandmothers basket. The bag breaks and Isatou quickly replaces it with another. What mistake does Isatou make with the torn bag? What problem do you see happening later on in the text?

Mood in Music

Much like authors can create tone or mood in their writing, musicians can create mood in their music!

Can you create 3 quick musical compositions each displaying a different mood. You can use your body, voice or items around the house to make sound.

  • happy/ cheerful
  • sad
  • scary/ tense

Can you play all 3 for a family member and see if they can guess which mood you are trying to set? What made each piece different?
