Cause and Effect

What is cause and effect??

Cause and effect relationships happen all the time throughout stories. The effect is what happened and the cause is why it happened. For example in the story of the Three Little Pigs, 'The three little pigs needed somewhere safe to live so they each built a house.'  What happened? And why did that happen?

Let's look at what happened. What happened in this sentence? The three pigs built a house. So the pigs building a house is the effect.

Let's look at why that happened. Why did the three pigs build a house? The three pigs needed somewhere safe to live. So the pigs needing somewhere safe to live is the cause.

This is how cause and effect looks when the information is organised into a cause and effect table.

Cause (Why it happened) Effect (What happened)
The three pigs needed somewhere safe to live. The three pigs built a house.

Task: Link the below causes with their matching effects. You may either draw a line from the cause to the effect or you might like to re-write the table with the cause next to the correct effect. (The first one has been done for you).

Challenge: Add you own cause and effect from this chapter to the table.

Multiplying by 100

 

MULTIPLYING BY 100

What is 3 x 100?

What is 4 x 100?

What is 7 x 100?

Do you notice a pattern when we multiply by 100?

Every time we multiply a number by 100, all of the digits shift two places to the left. Even if the number is a decimal number. We always need to make sure that we use a 0 as a placeholder in the ones and the tens columns if there are no decimals to shift to the left. 

 

Can you use this trick to quickly multiply 374 x 100 quickly?

 That's right! It is 37400 because all of the digits moved two positions to the left and we used 0 as a placeholder in the ones column and in the tens column.

Can you use this trick to quickly multiply 45.3 x 100 quickly?

That's right! It is 4530 because all of the digits moved two positions to the left. We needed to use a placeholder in the ones column because there were no more decimals to shift into the ones column.

Task: Complete the work below. All students should be able to do Blue work (level 1). The pink work (Level 2) is for students who would like to challenge themselves with work that is a bit more difficult. If you cannot use a computer or iPad to colour the work and you do not have a printer to print it, just write each number sentence like I have in the example (highlighted in black).

 

Blue work (Level 1)

Multiply each plane by 10 and 100. Colour in the plane and its multiples of 10 and 100 in the same colour. The first one has been done for you.

32 x 10 = 320 and 32 x 100 = 3200

 

 

 

Pink work (Level 2)

 3.2 x 10 = 32 and 3.2 x 100 = 320

Independent Activity - Learn How to Set the Table for Dinner

Families all over the world eat dinner in different ways.

  • Some families share one large plate of food in the centre and eat with their hands
  • Some families serve one big bowl of food in the centre and each person puts some of the food onto their own plate
  • Some families serve a portion of food onto each person's plate after cooking and then take those plates to the dinner table to eat.
  • Some families use knives as forks to eat and others use chop sticks .

 

There is no right or wrong way to eat dinner with your family. 

 

The video below shows the formal and traditional way to set the table for dinner here in the UK. I don't know about you, but to me that seems like a LOT of knives, forks, spoons and glassware!

 

 Task: Learn how your family like to set the table for dinner and try doing it all yourself.
