 Grammar - Verbs

A verb is a word for an action that someone or something does. It describes the movement in the sentence.  Verbs are interesting because every single sentence has to have a verb in it, otherwise it does not make sense.

Here are some examples of verbs:

- walk

- jump

- slither

- swing

- talk

- fly

For example, in the sentence, "Nathan answered the phone to Miss Hobbs" what do you think the verb is?

Whenever I am looking for a verb in a sentence, I try to picture the sentence in my mind and I think, "What is the character doing?"

Nathan is answering the phone in my sentence so the verb must be answered.

Watch the video below to consolidate what you just learnt about verbs.

For today's task, I would like you to find one verb (action) that each character does in Chapter 5 of Journey to the River Sea. Write the sentence and the verb in that sentence. The first one has been done for you.

Task: Complete the table below.

Character Sentence Verb in that Sentence

Beatrice

Miss Minton

Hands on Activity - Make your own Breakfast

It is really important to be able to make your own breakfast because it means you are more independent and also frees up time for your parents  or guardians in the morning.

Watch this video of children trying breakfast from all over the world.

Task: Make your own breakfast.

It could be any breakfast you like. It might be something fancy or it might be something simple but the important thing is to prepare, cook and serve it all yourself.

If you like, you can send me a video or photo of you making breakfast at hhobbs@sfdprimary.co.uk  I will post the photos in the Independent Champions section of our Year 4 weekly page.

It is important to learn how to do things for yourself. This is called being INDEPENDENT. Learning to be more independent and do things for yourself helps you:

  • learn new things
  • build self-esteem and confidence
  • make good decisions
  • develop responsibility
  • feel important and like you belong
  • develop coordination
